Unless you are very new to trying to design your own website, you have probably seen some of the out of the box programs that are out there. There are non-software based products out there where you make the website solely online. Some of these online website makers are Weebly.com and Tripod.com. It can be difficult to know when to hire a firm and when you can design it yourself. The first thing you will need to do to figure this out is to take a look at the size of your project. Are you going to be selling a physical product or an information product? Knowing this before you go into a project, will help you to eliminate possiblities before you waste too much on it. For e-commerce sites you will have to go down the route of using products like – Xcart, SugarCRM, Magento or Zencart. On the other hand if you plan on designing an informational product, you will probably want to just use some specialized templates.

Now that you have figured out what is going to be needed to get your website up and running, it is now time to jump into picking the software to use to make some of your images and graphics. Sometimes this is not as easy as it sounds to do graphics, but if you watch a couple tutorials you will be at least able to make a text logo. A good free program that you can get is called GIMP.

What you need to do now that you know the options of making a website on your own is to figure out what it is going to take to you learn the process of making a website. Look at your hourly rate and determine that it might take you 20 hard hours to build a decent website with all the content and pages. You might find out that after you add up your total hours to complete your site at your hourly rate, it might be better to hire someone else to do the process. Finding a company that does good work and is reputable is going to take some research. The best thing to do is to start in your local area. Make sure that after you check out their homepages you take a look at their portfolios. Then the next step would be to contact some of the companies that they have done work with in the past. What you are trying to find out is how they handled the clients needs. Once you find some companies to interview, go get a face to face with the design firm. You are looking to gather from the sit down with them, weather or not you like the people that you will be giving your money to.
