Obviously there are many more than just 3 steps to designing your website, however the fundamentals can be boiled down to just 3 things you need to consider before you start, they are. Planning, audience and results, by themselves they do not mean a whole lot but let me explain what each means and maybe you will get more of an idea of what I mean.
Planning
This encompasses everything else, planning is the first and most important thing you need to do when thinking about your website. Before you think about opening up the web building software, hiring a web design business or purchasing the domain name you have to have a focussed idea of what you want to achieve with the website. Sitting with a pencil and paper and sketching out your ideas will save you a lot of time and money when you move forward with your project, if you do not know exactly what you want think about it until you do.
Audience
Who is the website for, an academic website is going to be designed and worded for that audience where as a site that is about your hobby such as a blog will be worded differently. If you do not write and design your site with your audience in mind you may put them off when they do visit and this is not what you want as they will never return if they find your academic site too full of fluff or your hobby blog too formal.
Results
What do you want your visitor to do when they reach your site, is it buy something or fill out a form or leave a comment. What ever it is you need your visitor to do make it clear and ensure that they do not have to click through too many pages to get to the one where they can buy your products or leave a comment.
By following these simple guide lines you will be able to have the website you want and that will work well for you.
